Publisher’s Weekly calls The Latehomecomer a “moving, unforgettable book.” The Star Tribune says calls it “A gripping, moving and colorful account of one Hmong family's triumph over armed enemies, privation, starvation and forced exile.” And readers across the country have devoured this remarkable memoir.

In her seminar for MCWW, Kao Kalia Yang will talk about the art and the complex nature of the memoir, using her own experience writing and publishing The Latehomecomer, as well as offer instruction and advice for anyone writing about his or her own life.

On Food Writing

with J.R. Norton

Food is one of the most universal of topics, and among the most challenging to tackle as a writer. The vast dimensions of the gastronomic world can be daunting to those seeking to gain a foothold. In this two hour seminar, food writer James Norton offers suggestions and advice for writers looking to master the practical basics of food and beverage writing, including both the artistic and the business aspects of the craft. Norton also offers practical insight into research, writing, and pitching feature stories, restaurant reviews, and longer projects, such as books.

James Norton writes the “A La Carte” column for City Pages. He’s also the author of a weekly column published on Chow.com, and has contributed food writing to numerous publications, including Salon, Popular Science, and Minnesota Monthly. He’s currently researching a book on the master cheesemakers of Wisconsin (www.mastercheesemakerbook.com), and is the author of Saving General Washington (Tarcher/Penguin).
